“Check” opens the profile on Instagram. If the page says it isn’t available, the name may be free. Platforms don’t let other sites check for you, so no generator can promise a name is free.
Instagram username rules
Instagram usernames can be up to 30 characters long and use letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Two periods in a row, and a period at the start or end, aren’t allowed. The generator only shows names that pass these rules. Here’s how Instagram compares with the other platforms:
| Platform | Length | Allowed | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–30 characters | Letters, numbers, . _ | No .. in a row; no . at the start or end | |
| TikTok | 2–24 characters | Letters, numbers, . _ | Can’t end with a period |
| X | 4–15 characters | Letters, numbers, _ | No periods at all; 15 characters max |
| YouTube | 3–30 characters | Letters, numbers, . _ - | . _ - not at the start or end |
How to pick a good Instagram username
- Make it easy to say and spell. People will type it from memory, hear it in a video, or see it on a sign.
- Match your name or brand. If a customer searches for you, your handle should be the obvious match.
- Use the same handle everywhere. One name on Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube makes you easier to find and tag. Keep it to 15 characters or fewer so it also fits X.
- Skip random numbers and extra underscores. They’re hard to remember and can look like a spam account.
- Put keywords in your Name field. Instagram search looks at both your username and the Name on your profile, so “Maya | Home Baker” helps people find you even if your handle is short.

Frequently asked questions
How do I come up with a good Instagram username?
Start with your name or brand, then add one word about what you post or how you want to sound, like maya.bakes or lumencoffeeco. Keep it short and easy to say, skip random numbers, and check that the same name is free on your other platforms.
How long can an Instagram username be?
Up to 30 characters. Shorter is better: names under about 15 characters are easier to remember and also fit X, which allows only 15.
What characters can I use in an Instagram username?
Letters, numbers, periods and underscores. You can’t use spaces, emoji or other symbols, two periods in a row, or a period at the start or end.
How do I know if an Instagram username is taken?
Tap Check next to a name to open instagram.com/that-name. If Instagram says the page isn’t available, the name may be free. The final test is typing it into Edit profile → Username in the app, which tells you right away.
Can I use the same username on Instagram and TikTok?
Yes, if it’s free on both. TikTok allows up to 24 characters and X only 15, so keep it short. Turn on “Only names that work on every platform” to see names that fit all four platforms’ rules.
Is the Instagram username generator free?
Yes. It’s free with no sign-up, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to us.
